2025 Syllabus - Musical Theatre

MT Traditional before 1945

Refer to Rules , read all syllabus rules with care.
One original score of the music or purchased digital music with attached receipt for each selection must be presented at the venue.

To be eligible for a scholarship, competitors must enter a minimum of TWO classes and receive a minimum mark of 85.

Own choice of a song from a music theatre originally from a staged production only. Selections from revues or workshops are not permitted.
Operetta (i.e. Gilbert & Sullivan and Herbert) ARE NOT permitted here they should be in classical voice.
Songs from animated or musical films must be entered into SONGS FROM THE SCREEN.

Care must be taken to ensure that songs chosen did not appear in movie versions first. For example - The Sound of Music - you will find it was first performed in 1959 on Broadway. The Sound of Music, "Movie" - was first produced in 1965.
Therefore, any song from The Sound of Music that was in the Broadway show must go in Musical Theatre.
When comparing the two songs lists, however, you will see that "I Have Confidence" and "Something Good" were NOT used in the original Broadway production so they would be eligible for Songs from the Screen and More only.
In the 2006 Broadway revival version of The Sound of Music, new songs that have been added to the show such as " How Can Love Survive " and "No Way to Stop it", eg. should be entered in Musical Theatre.

The ensemble must consist of a minimum of four contestants to a maximum of ten contestants.
The average of the ages of all participants must be equal or be less than the category entered.
Selections chosen by the ensemble can only be entered into one age group level.
A maximum of one minute of dialogue is allowed.

Musical Theatre Age Groups (provincial)

Refer to Rules, read all syllabus rules with care. Entering these classes does not mean that the candidate is automatically moving forward to Provincial Competition.

One original score of the music or purchased digital music with attached receipt for each selection must be shown on camera prior to the beginning of the performance.
Performance Requirements for Beginner and Primary Musical Theatre Levels:
a) Competitors must perform TWO (2) selection from the following:
• Fully staged musical theatre productions
• Selections from animated films and movie musicals are permitted at the Beginner and Primary Levels
• Selections from STAGED Disney Productions. Please note: Competitors must use the versions of songs as shown in the production book/score and not arrangements or Junior show versions.
• Musical Theatre selections from the RCM Popular Selection List and the CC Idioms lists are permitted from RCM List C for Levels 1-6 and RCM List D for Levels 7-10.
b) NOT permitted:
• Musicals that have only been workshopped, songs from revues, cabarets or songs that are written as stand-alone songs in musical theatre style
• Songs listed in the RCM or CC classical syllabi (List A and B from Levels 1-6; Lists A, B, C from levels 7-10).
• Operetta/light opera selections (Gilbert & Sullivan, Romberg, Lehar, Johann Strauss)
• Selections that are primarily spoken patter,( eg. Ya Got Trouble 'The Music Man', Aaron Burr, Sir 'Hamilton')
• Selections from Junior show versions of musicals that have been cut or simplified
• Vocal cuts except for repeated choruses
c) Competitors will be judged on their choice of selections, interpretation, contrasting tempi, style, vocal quality and age appropriateness.
d) It is recommended that both selections be from different musicals and different composers.
e) It is recommended that one selection be a ballad and one selection be up-tempo.
f) Performances must be from memory.
g) The absolute maximum performance times are as follows: 10 Minutes for Beginner and Primary, Elementary, Junior. 15 minutes for Intermediate, Senior Advanced and Adult.
h) It is the competitor's responsibility to abide by any and all government guidelines regarding physical distancing as of the date you submit your video.
i) Accepted accompaniment can include: Live piano or piano back-tracks, etc. Accompaniment should not include background vocals if using tracks.
j) Stage movement is allowed, but no dance breaks.
k) Two (2) simple handheld props (e.g. comb, basket, or book); one (1) standard rehearsal theatre box, one table and one chair are allowed. No other props will be permitted.
l) Costumes are allowed, but will not be judged.
m) Spoken passages are only allowed if published in the score being used and cannot represent more than 10% of the selection.
n) Selections should be age appropriate. PKMF reserves the right to reject any selections that are deemed inappropriate, either in style or content.
